AEGIS — Adaptive Grid-Interactive Edge Datacenter Fleets is a European research and training network. It teaches datacenters to work with the power grid: to use less energy, follow clean power, and help keep the grid steady. AEGIS is funded by the EU and trains 15 PhD students from 2026 to 2030.

The challenge
Edge datacenters — small computing sites close to where data is produced — are spreading fast, driven by AI. But the power grid is under strain, and Europe wastes large amounts of clean energy because supply, demand, and grid limits do not match. Today, datacenters sit on the grid as passive loads, blind to its needs.
The AEGIS solution
The same datacenters could help the grid instead. AEGIS builds software-defined flexibility: technologies that let a site change its power use on purpose — through batteries, cooling, and adaptable computing — and that coordinate many sites into one Virtual Power Plant. The work spans three layers: safe physical control, carbon-aware intelligence, and fleet orchestration. Read about the research.
